The trade relations between Indonesia and Italy in the 2008-2009 period had been positively developing and remain unaffected by the global financial crisis, chief of the Italian trade commission said.

Italian Trade Commission Chairman DR Angelo Infresino said Indonesia`s exports to Italy in 2008 up to May this year reached US$1.6 billion against its imports worth about US$1 billion.

Angelo Infresino, who was accompanied by his staff Yaniman S Lani, said that Indonesia`s imports in the previous years reached only US$600 to US$750 million.

According to Angelo, Indonesia exported commodities like furniture, crude palm oil, garments and shoes, while it imported telecommunications machinery and furniture.

In 2009, the performance of the two countries` trade in the first quarter is not too different from that in the corresponding period a year earlier.

“The global financial crisis has not yet affected the trade relations between the two nations, and still have good prospects,” he said.

Referring to Indonesia`s tourism potentials, Angelo said that Italy gave a significant response to Indonesia`s tourism products such as those in Bali and Bunaken.

Italian businessmen are making an investment in this sector by opening an diving school, diving club, cottage and medium-sized hotels.

According to Italian Ambassador Roberto Palmieri, about 700 thousand Italian tourists travel to Indonesia every year to visit tourist objects in the country such as those in Bali and Bunaken.

“The number of Italian tourists arriving in Indonesia every year reaches 70 thousand people. They generally arrive in the tourist resort island of Bali,” he said on the sidelines of the Italian anniversary here on Tuesday night.

The ambassador said that the tourism objects in Bali were well known in Italy. But many other interesting tourist objects in Indonesia have not yet been visited by enough number of Italian tourists.
